Our step-by-step for painting cabinets
Painting kitchen cabinets is a cost-effective way to give your kitchen a fresh and updated look. Here is a general process for cabinet painting:
- Preparation:
- Remove all cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware (handles, knobs, etc.). Label each piece or cabinet with a number or masking tape to remember where they belong.
- Clean the surfaces of the cabinets thoroughly to remove grease, grime, and dirt. Use a mixture of warm water and a mild degreasing cleaner if needed.
- Protect your kitchen with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to prevent paint splatter.
- Sanding:
- Sand the cabinet surfaces, including the doors and drawer fronts, with 120-220 grit sandpaper. This step helps to roughen the surface and remove any existing finish.
- After sanding, wipe down the cabinets with a tack cloth or a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust.
- Priming:
- Apply a primer to the cabinet surfaces. Primer helps paint adhere better and provides a smooth base for the paint. We recommend oil paint because of its adhesion properties.
- Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Usually, this takes a day.
- Painting:
- Once the primer is dry, lightly sand the surfaces, then start applying your chosen paint. At ProReal, we use a paint sprayer for this step.
- Apply thin, even coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next one. Depending on the paint type, you may need 2-3 coats for full coverage.
- Make sure to paint the cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and cabinet frames separately. Allow them to dry completely before reassembling.
- Drying and Reassembly:
- Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. This can take a day or more depending on the paint and humidity.
- Once the paint is completely dry, reinstall the cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware.
- We recommend light use for the first 30 days as paint usually takes a few weeks to fully cure.
- Finishing Touches:
- Replace or add new cabinet hardware if desired. This can give your cabinets a fresh look.
- Clean up any paint spills or drips and remove any painter’s tape.
- Enjoy your newly painted cabinets!
Remember that proper surface preparation and patience are key to achieving a professional-looking cabinet painting job.
PAINT AND ACCENT WALL WORK
Why sherwin williams paint is our preffered vendor
Sherwin-Williams is a well-known and reputable paint manufacturer, and there are several differences between Sherwin-Williams paint and other brands, though these differences can vary depending on the specific brands being compared. Here are some key factors to consider when comparing Sherwin-Williams paint to other brands:
- Quality and Performance:
- Sherwin-Williams is often praised for the quality and performance of its paints. They offer a wide range of paint products, including options for interior and exterior use, as well as specialty paints like those for cabinets, trim, and ceilings.
- Sherwin-Williams paints are known for their durability, coverage, and resistance to wear and tear. They often require fewer coats to achieve full coverage, which can save time and money.
- Color Selection:
- Sherwin-Williams is known for its extensive color selection and color-matching capabilities. They offer a vast array of colors and can create custom colors to match your specific preferences.
- While other brands also offer a range of colors, the breadth of options and the accuracy of color matching can vary.
- Price Point:
- Sherwin-Williams paints are generally considered to be in the mid to high-price range. They are known for their quality, but this can also make them more expensive than some budget paint brands.
- Other brands may offer more budget-friendly options, but the quality and performance may not be on par with Sherwin-Williams.
- Customer Service and Expertise:
- Sherwin-Williams stores typically provide knowledgeable staff who can offer advice on paint selection, color choices, and application techniques. This can be valuable for homeowners and professionals alike.
- While other paint brands may also have knowledgeable staff, the level of expertise and customer service can vary from store to store.
- Specialty Products:
- Sherwin-Williams offers a variety of specialty paints and coatings for specific applications, such as industrial coatings, marine paints, and more. These products may not be readily available from all paint brands.
- Warranty and Guarantees:
- Sherwin-Williams often provides warranties and guarantees on their paints, which can give customers peace of mind regarding the longevity and performance of the products.
- Other paint brands may have their own warranty policies, but the terms and coverage can differ.
- Environmental Considerations:
- Sherwin-Williams, like many paint manufacturers, has developed low-VOC (volatile organic compound) and environmentally friendly paint options. If environmental factors are important to you, consider these options when comparing brands.
Ultimately, the choice between Sherwin-Williams paint and other brands depends on your specific needs, budget, and preferences. It’s a good idea to research and compare different brands, read customer reviews, and, if possible, test the paint in a small area before committing to a larger project to ensure it meets your expectations in terms of quality and performance.
